Sales Pitch: The Art of a Convincing Presentation
As a salesperson, your sales pitch is one of your most important tools for success. The ability to deliver a persuasive pitch is critical. The right mix of data, storytelling and personal connection can make an enormous difference to how your message is received and remembered. In this guide, we cover the following:
- What is a pitch?
- Elements of a good pitch
- How do you deliver a convincing pitch?
- Practical pitch examples
What is a pitch?
A pitch is fundamentally a targeted presentation with the purpose of persuading or informing about a service or a product. It is usually delivered within a limited timeframe and requires focused, relevant content tailored to the recipient.
An effective pitch combines precise information with a story that captures your lead's interest and builds empathy, while its core message is communicated clearly.
The ultimate goal of a pitch is to create a connection with the person that results in a desired response, whether that is an investment, a purchase, a partnership, or simply understanding of and interest in an idea or product. It requires insight into psychology, a solid understanding of the product or idea, and the ability to communicate it effectively.
In our view, a pitch can be built on what we call the 5-Point Pitch Model. The pitch is made up of five elements:
- Be unique: show you have done your homework before you called the person.
- Problem: make clear what you want to help the person with and what you solve for them.
- Trend: connect the problem to a trend, something that is likely on their agenda, to become relevant.
- Solution: present your solution to their problem.
- FOMO: tell them how you solve the same problem for others.
This is what we call a pitch that starts with the recipient and appeals to them in a relevant way.
Elements of a good pitch
As described above, a pitch basically consists of five elements, and there are many different ways to build your pitch around them.
At the heart of a successful sales pitch lies the ability to clearly identify and communicate the customer's needs and how your solution meets them. It is essential to show a complete match between problem and solution.
Storytelling is a decisive component: a well-structured narrative can convey cold facts and create a real connection.
Effective communication is strengthened by visual aids and convincing demonstrations that convey the pitch's central messages in a concrete and memorable format. This means using technological tools as well as physical materials.
Finally, a concise call to action must be at the core, prompting action and ensuring that your pitch turns into concrete results.
Use the 5-Point Pitch Model in your next call
The 5-Point Pitch Model is a template salespeople across the Nordics download and use to structure and communicate their product or service in a way that appeals to the recipient. Before your next call, write one sentence for each point: what makes your approach unique to this person, the problem you solve, the trend that makes it relevant now, your solution, and who you already solve it for.
How do you deliver a convincing sales pitch?
Mastering the art of a convincing sales pitch requires a structured approach (unless you are a natural talent), both in preparing and in executing your pitch. It is fundamental to tune in to the recipient's frequency and align the message of the pitch, so it resonates clearly and with purpose.
A structured build-up is the key element of a razor-sharp pitch: open with a compelling hook that sparks interest, then develop your value proposition with concrete examples, and close with a strong point that cements the message and creates FOMO. The skill of moving through these steps with smooth transitions is what makes a good sales pitch.
Your belief in your own product or solution must shine through with impact. That requires a balanced mix of enthusiasm and fact-based conviction, where you can argue effectively for the unique benefits and tangible results the customer can expect.
Practical pitch examples
A practical example of each phase of a good sales pitch is hard to give in general terms, so let us try with a specific case. Imagine you work for a company that delivers ESG reporting solutions.
You start by being unique and showing you have done your research: "Hi Lotte, I am calling because I can see that (company name) is covered by the new CSRD legislation and has not yet got started on it." You can see this in their annual report.
Next, you make the problem clear: "As you probably know, companies of your size must report on this from this year."
Then you connect it to a trend: "and investors and banks see it as fundamental when they provide capital."
Then comes the solution: "It may sound expensive and complex. We have built a solution that gets you there in under 48 hours, and we are happy to give you a no-obligation introduction."
Then you create some FOMO: "We help Company A, Company B and Company C with exactly this."
That is how a good sales pitch can be executed.
